Kerala Beef Varathathu / Beef Roast

This is a spicy Kerala Beef Roast recipe. This goes well with Kerala rice, chappatis or simply as a side dish for drinks.
Ingredients :

  • Beef  cubes: 1/2 Kg
  • Chilli powder : 3 tsp
  • Coriander powder : 3 tsp
  • Pepper powder : 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon stick : 1 inch long
  • Cloves: 5 nos
  • Cardamom : 1 no
  • Turmeric : 1/4 tsp
  • Onion
  • Tomatoes : 2 nos
  • Green chillis : 3 nos
  • Ginger : 1 inch
  • Garlic: 6 nos
  • Curry leaves
  • Lemon : 1 no
  • Coconut pieces : 1/2 cup

Method of Preparation:
Mix Chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper, turmeric together Add lemon juice and marinate the beef. Keep this aside for one hour.

Chop 4 onions and sauté them in a heavy pan. Ground cinnamon stick, cloves and cardamom and add to the frying pan.  Add 3 green chillies  (chopped), ginger (chopped), garlic (chopped), curry leaves and sauté till the onion is golden brown. Add 2 chopped tomatoes and cook till the tomatoes blend into a thick gravy.
Add the beef, coconut  and slow cook the meat until its properly cooked. Once the beef is cooked, increase the flame until the water evaporates and the beef is properly roasted. Alternatively, this could be cooked in pressure cooker. this will be faster in pressure cooker. But cooking on a slow flame gives better taste.
